i guess i shouldn't blame x.org and their driver writers all the way here: 
there's a crash in gtk (specfically when xembeding gtk controls into apps with 
a different colormap) that the gtk team has said they will not fix (they 
consider it an "invalid use case") that other toolkits don't suffer from. right 
now we work around it in the systray. =/

i'd be happy to see a work around in this case. i'll be pleasantly surprised 
to see one emerge. but in this case it really seems to be driver dependant.
