I'm not familar with Redhat, but it was mentioned, that you can only use the
rpm, if your system is up to date with up2date. Please see uml-user thread
"not able to start umbello" some days ago.

KDEDIR should be the right variable. On my system it points to /opt/kde.
Let's see what is in this directory:

bash-2.05$ ls $KDEDIR
bin/  doc/  etc/  include/  lib/  man/  share/

But if you were able to see the splash screen, you did right, because it
installed the images correctly.
