for good measure, could you also do a make clean (and then make/make install)?

Yes, this is pretty ugly, but anytime this happens, something is seriously 
wrong, already, so there's not much point in trying to fix this (which would 
be pretty hard).

Well, try with the above. Hopefully it will solve the problem.
