Yes it can be used. Under ubuntu which I use there is a package of rkward. 

The question is if you have installed R or ubuntu repos or compiled it
yourself.

If the first is true then install rkward from the repos. If you want to upgrade
to the current version download the rkward.deb package, click on it, it should
say that an older version is availiable at the repos and ask you if you want
to install this, you says yes and probably you are ready. If there is any problem
you can say.

If you have compiled R yourself you have to compile rkward yourself too. That
means that you have to install some qt developments libraries. During the
configuration script if you get any errors you have to fix them.
