Summary: KRunner rendering and performance terribly slow
           Product: krunner
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: FreeBSD Ports
        OS/Version: FreeBSD
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: panel-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: david usermode org

Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: FreeBSD Ports
Compiler: gcc 4.2.1
OS: FreeBSD

The rendering and performance of KRunner is terribly slow. When I type Alt-F2 I can see a noticable flicker as it paints. Then when I start typing in a command, the krunner window lags in expanding and lags when displaying icons. First the window is skinny and black, then it expands and the expanded area is white (you can see it visibly jerkily resize, is this supposed to be animation?), then the white area repaints black (approx 1/2 to 1 second delay), then finally displays a list of icons. It is very slow, almost to the unusable stage.

Worst of all, input is not occuring while the rendering is taking place! If I type in konqueror, I get up to "konq" then the window starts resizing and stuff, and the remaining "ueror" does not get displayed until a second or two later after it is done painting!

The KDE3 minicli is extremely fast and responsive in comparison, almost instantaneous. I have to have hit Alt-F2 several times before I eyes can detect any flicker at all. There is absolutely no resizing or painting problems.

While I appreciate the "eye candy", it is a poor substitute for usability. Is there any way to get "plain vanilla" KDE3 Minicli back?
