This seems like a lot of work given their planned obsolescence in 12
months.

I'm not so sure.  It's not more difficult to mouse-over an icon then it was
before and the applet handle appears as expected.

I planned on re-enabling the background when an Icon was selected.  This of
course would require implementation of a selection object.
