to discourage people from using icons? ;) kidding, kidding.
no, it's primarily due to background contrast (no colour combo will prevent
that without a background or a text halo, btw). one could go about
implementing text halos, but i'm not about to ask for that unless you (or
someone like you) feels particularly compelled to do so; this still doesn't
give us the "all in one" feel of having a unified background.
particularly when we start using the icon actions again i think this will help
things.
also, i had an interesting working demo using QGraphicsScene when it *first*
was in tech preview where i painted part of the background on *top* of the
icon on selection to show that it was indeed selected and the whole thing on
hover to provide access to the hover interface.
i'd like to experiment with that again at some point as it was really quite
interesting.
