yes, this is a must.

it may indeed by unnecessary now; however, without caching we'd need to only 
paint the exposed area which would be more complicated.

the painting of the background scales just fine. that's why it looks fine on 
applets of different sizes. this is not an issue.

yes, it probably makes sense to add a way to set which buttons get shown.
