good point, even though the Chrome sync protocol is some kind of non-open ugly 
thing which doesn't even encrypt the data on the client side...

The great thing about it is the ease of use. That is something the mozilla 
folks implemented very well :) 

So yes, for bookmarks it is probably a good idea to use something different 
than that due to the encryption, but keep in mind there is other data as well 
(auto-fill entries, passwords, extensions) that are very nice to keep in sync.
