All the downloaded images are saved on disk at cache/icons/ ( relative address - for me it's "~/.local/share/marble/cache/icons/" ).
As I understood from GeoDataObject::resolvePath(..), using resolvePath() in GeoDataIconStyle::icon(), directory 
'GeoDataDocument::baseUri() + iconPath' is searched.
