A new user isn't essential, but it will clear up many of these issues. You
create a new user (mine is named "kde-devel"), and in its .bashrc, you define
the QTDIR, KDEDIR, etc. for KDE4. Then all you have to do is login as
yourself, open a konsole, and do "su - kde-devel". You can then execute
kstars in that konsole without adversely affecting your running KDE-3.x
session at all.

I don't know if it will clear up the CPU usage issue, but I think it might.
Let me know if you continue to get 100% usage, even with a separate user.
I'm not seeing that problem here (well, at least not when kstars is just
idling).

If you really don't want to create a new user, just run "kdeinit" (not from
the konsole where you've set up kde-4 though!) to reset everything back to
normal after running kstars-4.0. I used to do it that way, until I finally
gave in and created a new user. :)

(snip!)

All that junk is it setting up the kde-4 infrastructure. You'll still see
that even if you set up a different user (but only the first time you run
kstars).

Hope it helps,
