Hi folks!
I want to point out some interesting topics around Kolab and OpenPKG.
Please note that OpenPKG introduced a "kolab" package today.
Along with it a new tiny little helper called the "OpenPKG poor man's
Boot, Build & Management Tool" (obmtool) was released. It is a shell
script which, along with a very simple configuration, shrinks the
current Kolab "Quick Installation Manual" down to a few words [1].
Even better, it is by no means limited to be used with Kolab only.
This tool can also ease foreign packager's life as they can build
a Debian, RedHat/Fedora whatever "kolab" package by just including
obmtool, obmtool.conf and, optionally the necessary RPMs, in their
native "kolab" package. No more porting and maintaining Kolab and fifty
related packages!
Additionally, a OpenPKG companion site called zfos.org has been setup to
allow for ftp downloads. The idea is to create a "Zen for Open Source"
space where add-on components are released. It should also act as a
place to brew solutions based on and around OpenPKG. The first component
is "obmtool" and the first thing to brew is Kolab. The spirit of ZfOS
is to go beyond OpenPKG by bundling packages into solutions with no
constraints in regard to the OpenPKG CVS branch and to provide binaries.
Consider the "kolab" package, the site around the "Zen for Open
Source" (ZfOS) idea and "obmtool" highly immature. Source packages are
provided by means of manual snapshot [2] so they remain even packages
vanished from OpenPKG CURRENT. However, obmtool was successfully used
to create lots of kolab binaries [3]. It does, along with a unreleased
predecessor, manage some fourty OpenPKG instances at the OpenPKG
development site for some months. Please give it a try and provide
feedback.
Download CFG or SRC or BIN (*), examine README file included and follow
instructions.
(*) believe it or not, obmtool does not yet provide good support for
binaries. Will be supported soon. As a workaround, copy/move binaries to
/kolab/RPM/PKG manually so they are recognized.
Thanks for listening. Have fun!
PS: i'm quite busy these days and predict being unable to answer
questions before weekend. Hey, i wanted to give you a head start :-)
