After some more testing:
A pigment map can't be inserted after a transformation which should be 
possible.
The crash seems to be a qt bug and has nothing to do with the insert 
error. Qt crashes in QPopupMenu::mouseReleaseEvent (the recent files 
menu). If you open the scene with file/open, the program does not crash.
