There are several considerations here:

1) I want to attach non-KPA data to images (comments, ratings, view counts.) KPA
can't necessarily be the authoritative source for /all/ my information.
2) Updating my thumbnails and syncing images to the CDN have CPU, network, and $
costs. A partial sync or partial thumbnail regeneration would have lower cost.

Issue 1 must be solved with unique IDs, whether KPA assigns them or I do. Issue
2 can be solved in other ways, and unique IDs would simply be beneficial (and
not the whole solution anyway.)

>From my perspective, the simplest thing would be to have KPA add unique IDs,
then link against those IDs. As it stands I can generate, resolve, and manage
the unique IDs separately, though -- it's not a blocker.
