Yeah, I agree, but there is one solution which is quite commonly implemented.

Yes ! The idea of using optionally regexp is the choice, I guess. For
those who know it, this option is present in the Search/File dialog of
Eclipse. I must obviously admit this is already a developer-oriented
app, so not using regexp by default is great, but permitting to do it
when needed is even better. Then checking the box would allow more
advanced users to also find their interests in the features.
