Maybe a set of regex 'templates' with short descriptions to provide a
starting point and propably even complete solutions to most common
situations.

  ".*\.(RAW|raw)$" matches .RAW or .raw extension
  "thumb"          matches if there is 'thumb' anywhere in the name
  "^Thumbnails$"   matches if name is exactly 'Thumbnails'

There could be an "Insert a template" button next to the regex field,
which would pop up a list of template descriptions to select from.

I remember seeing something like this in action, could have been
MythTV.
