sorry for the late answer...
I made some checks and I I can give you more details:

I have near 6500 pictures in 250 folders.

Now a rescan took 30 secs on 1.7 GHz Centrino with 512 Mb ram and pictures
on a Reiser FS.

I think 30 secs is a good performance!

The test made me realize why I percieved an apparent slowness:
recently I inserted big batches of photos, 200 per time and 5Mp res and
1.5/2 Mb per image.
Sometimes I had to rename some folders too and the time was quite different
(I didn't measured it)
and made me think at subfolder rescan reqquest.
SORRY, I was not understandig it probably was calculating md5 for the found
images (isn't it?)!

Could it be useful to add to the progress bar a simple label showing detail
abuot the runnning activity? I' wouldn't be fooled if I knew what was going
on...
(not strictly necessary, nor urgent)
