I tested your questions and am now without the use of my root on KDE desktop
once again. The answer to one of your trials--the one where you asked if I
could get a konsole by Alt F2 and then konsole &--  is NO. Afeter I changed
the date/time format and re-logged in ( as it rquests to activate the
changes) all was lost. All the konsoles and even Kmail didn't work when I
requested to send my reply to you.
As for other problems- I find the prescan window for xscan also performs the
vanishing act after invoking xsane.
I tried replacing the vmlinuz file and that did not cure the problem.
The only way I found to recover is tto make an entirely new system with the
packages all replaced. Some nuisance.
I suggest that the most important information is that the problem only exists
for the user who makes the date/time change.
Do you have any suggestions to recover in a simpler manner. And please don't
ask for anymore trials--it costs me too much time to rebuild.
