Hi Stephan,
Some more observations:
1) The kcmshell exits with signal 11(SIGSEGV) when I try to change the
date/time format AFTER having the problem.
2) Since the bug is local to the user it must be that the date/time
format writes into an area  reserved separately for each user and
modifies something in those locations.
