working with reports : is there a finer grain possible for accounts selection ?

You should start by looking through all the options for configuring  
reports.  You can select any set of accounts, any set of categories.   
You can also select any time period.  I don't know if you can show  
account balances as of a given date (probably, I just have not tried)  
but you can certainly show all transactions for a set of accounts for a  
set of categories for last calendar year.  Also, if you ticked the  
"tax" box for an appropriate set of categories, you could start with  
any of the Tax related reports.

Is there really something you want that can't be done?  If so, can you  
give a small, concrete example?
