main window ?
it makes no sense to limit such a splitting area to be the central part of
the main window, it should be a standalone widget, for example kate and
konqueror would like to have such an area inside a tabwidget, this is btw.
the reason why kmdi2 and katemdi have a tabwidget as central part of the
mainwindow, which is as broken. The app should just be able to set a own
central widget,
the new kmdi should provide:

a) a mainwindow with managment for toolviews, nothing more
b) a splitable/tabable widget for common use

than you can have what you want, simple apps would just use the toolview
part, something like the qmainwindow in qt4 provides, but with an IDEA
style, apps like kdevelop could use the split... thingy in addition, and
apps like kate first can use the mainwin, later perhaps transition over to
use the generic splitting stuff replacing their own code (perhaps even
konqui could do so)
