openraster - openexr?

Has openexr been looked at?  I would think that it would meet much of
the needs that openraster does, and that perhaps an extension of
openexr for whatever needs it doesn't meet might be a better idea.
OpenEXR supports deep raster images, layers, loading and saving in
tiles, and a large number of other advanced and useful features.
OpenEXR is also already widely supported.  Thus you would have less
effort convincing commercial entitites to support it.

Or if OpenEXR has been examined is there somewhere discussing the
rationale against using it as a basis?
