This is where you are plain wrong; for as long as coders have been 
creating GUIs there have been attempts to make them automated and 
data-driven and all that.
Each and everyone had very basic problems limiting the usability of them, 
most of the time in a severe manner.

If you don't want to create a UI file, then ask someone else to do it for 
you, or even better create a tool that writes out a very simple UI file 
with your config options at compile time unless there already is a UI 
file in svn.  This makes it easy for people like me to 'fix' the UI file 
to actually make it usability sane.
