Fill_painter broken and colordistance in autolayer

Photoshop. I had two layers, and moved the layer outside the window and painted
a gradient with 50% opacity, rinse & repeat a few times, and then choose bucket
fill, and suddenly I've got a staircase of blocks going diagonally over the
layer.
