Someone else seems to have addressed your situation better than I am able to.  
I use SuSE Linux.  I will, however suggest you not try to compile things as 
root.  I hope you are running KDevelop as a normal user, and not as root.  
The reason I asked if it worked from the commandline is to determine if your 
environment was configured correctly.  That can be a bit tricky in itself.  
If you run KDevelop by clicking an icon, or using F2, that can give a 
different environment than you get in at a bash prompt.  But trying to 
compile as root is not a good test of your user environment.  It's actually 
likely many things /won't/ work as root, but will work for a regular user.  
Root tends to have a minimal environment.
