Sloooow response

KDevelop 2.0.2/KDE 2.2.2/Redhat 6.2

I came into work this morning and my desktop wasn't responding.
Logging in remotely showed that X was using 92% of the CPU so I
restarted the computer. Now KDevelop is unusable... When the focus
is in the edit frame, switching files/opening menus/refreshing the
screen takes 5-15 seconds. If the focus is in one of the other frames
(messages or Groups for instance), response is "instant".

Any suggestions for what happened? It was working yesterday, so I'm
looking for a response other than RTFM or Upgrade to the latest
version :-)
