You need to include a configure check for ncurses includes and
libraries. Maybe you have a look at the kdevelop.m4 file to see how that
works. It seems for the next kdevelop version we have to consider a way
to make that easier for the users once we fiddled out how to exactly do
that automatically via a GUI. 
David, interested in helping here ?

BTW: you should consider working with 1.3 at last if not updating to KDE
2.1 libraries and installing a 1.4 snapshot. You´ll see a *lot* of
improvements and increase of stability here and there.
