One more try with tabs at top-right, plus a highlighting of the currently 
active area. I've also adjusted it so it looks approximately the way it is 
possible to implement without too much hassle: Just add a tab-widget at the 
right side of the menu, and somehow let its bottom border line fade out to the 
left.

The switcher is not in the way, but due to the highlighting it's still 
visible, and a switch will catch the eye.

It looks a bit less "realistic" now, but also less cluttered.
