usualy those files are under the same subdirectory. 
this kate wishlist is related to the topic: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57460
it describes grouping files by their directory (i.e. filetree filtered to display only opened files and their folders) 
i believe that together with kate's colored filelist (last-use-time-based) it is what you want.
