My experience is pretty much the same as Anders, message filtering is a 
bit "odd" and not always working but the general experience is otherwise 
good. Filtering has apparently been rewritten totally and clearly some 
bugs entered the code.

Note that I use only pop mail accounts so I can not say whether the IMAP 
now works better, as I understand it was pretty bad in 4.7 and 4.8.x

I actually use both Thunderbird (for mailing lists and other 
"non-work-related" stuff) and KMail and Thunderbird is rock solid but 
lacks the integration with KDE. Kontact/KDEPIM 2 is improving though the 
lack of email address autocompletion and groups/lists kept me off 4.8.x

So my main mailer/PIM is and I hope will be Kontact/KDEPIM
