I don't think you can make it the exact same name. Besides the
extension often changing, maybe sometimes it will not (e.g. H.264 MOV
-> DV MOV).

I think it is good to think about transcoding like this not only as a
crutch to improve compatibility, but also for proxy generation. But
there are additional considerations for proxy handling, and maybe this
feature can be used for both, but it does require the intentional
design.
Also, in the Render dialog, we should make a simple change to run
multiple render jobs sequentially as opposed to parallel. Then, add
some additional functionality to batch transcode files outside of the
timeline.
