No "single instance" mode for Kate in KDE 4?

Do you know what would happen if we took the attitude that "KDE4 must do 
everything KDE3 did, plus new features"?

It's been done. It isn't pretty.

(Hint: they claim 90+% of all desktop installations and are about to 
release "7".)
