I also don't have the problem on either Debian (KDE packages from Squeeze) or 
openSUSE 11.1 (KDE packages from the KDE42 repositories).

Of course, you can change the font size used in "Configure KMail..." -> 
"Appearance" section -> "Fonts" tab.  You may have to check the "Use custom 
fonts" option before you can change anything else.
