KMail and user certificate support

All:

I'm interested in using KMail, but I require S/MIME support for signing
and encrypting mail.

I see in "Edit Identity" (window) -> Cryptography (tab), there is S/MIME
signing certificate, and S/MIME encryption certificate, but they're both
grayed out for me.

Another problem that may be related is when I attempt to start
kleopatra.  I did some searching and found this maintains the
certificates for KDE.  When I attempt to start it, I get:

The crypto plugin could not be initialized.  Certificate Manager will
terminate now.

Can someone direct me on how I should proceed?  Thanks in advance!
