Thank you for being so patient with me, Kevin. I have found these
amarok.desktop files:
feisty at feisty-laptop:~$ locate amarok.desktop
/home/feisty/.kde/share/apps/konqsidebartng/entries/amarok.desktop
/usr/share/applications/kde/amarok.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqsidebartng/add/amarok.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqsidebartng/kicker_entries/amarok.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqsidebartng/entries/amarok.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/amarok.desktop
feisty at feisty-laptop:~$

I assume that the only one in my user's home directory is the relevant
file. But upon opening it I find nothing of relevant significance:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Link
URL=
Name=Amarok
GenericName=Audio Player
Comment=Uncle Rodney says, "10/10, Amarok is seriously super!"
Icon=amarok
Open=true
X-KDE-KonqSidebarModule=konqsidebar_universalamarok
X-KDE-KonqSidebarUniversal=true
X-KDE-KonqSidebarAddModule=konqsidebar_universalamarok
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=desktop_extragear-multimedia_amarok
(string translations snipped)

Similarly, I see that although mplayer is not a KDE app, it does also
have an mplayer.desktop file in my user's directory. However, like
with Amarok, I find nothing that seems significant as to it's
preference as a media player:

[Desktop Entry]
Categories=GTK;Application;AudioVideo;Audio;Video;Player;TV;
Comment=Multimedia player
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=gmplayer
GenericName=Multimedia player
Icon=mplayer.xpm
MimeType=application/ogg;application/x-ogg;application/sdp;application/smil;application/x-smil;application/streamingmedia;application/x-streamingmedia;application/vnd.rn-realmedia;application/vnd.rn-realmedia-vbr;audio/aac;audio/x-aac;audio/m4a;audio/x-m4a;audio/mp1;audio/x-mp1;audio/mp2;audio/x-mp2;audio/mp3;audio/x-mp3;audio/mpeg;audio/x-mpeg;audio/mpegurl;audio/x-mpegurl;audio/mpg;audio/x-mpg;audio/rn-mpeg;audio/scpls;audio/x-scpls;audio/vnd.rn-realaudio;audio/wav;audio/x-pn-windows-pcm;audio/x-realaudio;audio/x-pn-realaudio;audio/x-ms-wma;audio/x-pls;audio/x-wav;video/mpeg;video/x-mpeg;video/x-mpeg2;video/msvideo;video/x-msvideo;video/quicktime;video/vnd.rn-realvideo;video/x-ms-afs;video/x-ms-asf;video/x-ms-wmv;video/x-ms-wmx;video/x-ms-wvxvideo;video/x-avi;video/x-fli;video/x-theora;video/x-matroska;uri/mms;uri/rtspt;uri/rtspu;uri/mmst;uri/mmsu
Name=MPlayer Movie Player
Terminal=false
TryExec=gmplayer
Type=Application

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
