Music I can (and do) just play directly on the desktop machine. What's
different about video is that I want the video to be displayed on the laptop
screen.

That just depends on how you have your music player's output configured. You
probably have it set to use ALSA directly, but you can also configure it to
go through ARTS, or OSS, or JACK, or....
