Kontact and Kmail integration

What controls the way kmail is embedded inside Kontact? For some reason 
clicking the "mail" icon in Kontact causes KMail to launch in a separate 
window.

I'm fairly sure I've not fiddled with anything, it just did it one day when I 
booted KDE.
