mime type error

I just attempted to install a wine based application including crossover 
office (application is Gupta Team Developer.  Bi=ought it at Linuxworld San 
Francisco (any input re Gupta would be appreciated).  My machine came to a 
grinding halt.  I had to reboot while waiting several minutes for init to 
send term signals to processes.  Before rebooting, I had this mime error and 
after rebooting also:
Little message boxes with the following titles:
sorry amoroK   Kate  KDE panel Kdesktop and I thing Open Office
Message in box is: could not find mime type application/octlet-stream

ideas?
Oh yes, and my visual foxpro (wine) no longer works
