More info.  After about 10 minutes the mache slows to a crawl and the disk is 
thrashing.  I the kde equiv of top and found knotify was hoarding about 67% 
of cpu time,   I only found one small reference to it in the kde help re: a 
text to voice program, so I killed it.  The disk is no longer thrashing and 
the computer has not slowed down.
