Desktop device icons do not show at all

More update --

It seems that kde lunches a copy of  dbus without telling anyone. If I 
explicitly start dbus I have two copies of dbus-daemon-1 running and the 
icons disappear. If I don't start dbus, but only HAL (with udev and no 
devfs), the icons are there.
