KDE 3.4.1 will not accept my GVim (6.3.084) as a GUI editor

It sounds like you're trying to use gvim as an embedded editor (which
presumably won't work). You can use gvim as a standalone editor for certain
types of files by setting it in the "File associations" dialog (under "KDE
components" in the control center).
