KDE hangs in mid login after upgrade to 3.4

Going back to your original message, it sounds like the problem might be
with the session manager and the session it's trying to restore. Try
renaming ~/.kde/share/config/session and maybe
~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc , then try again.
