Can't run KDE 3.2 on Fedora Core 1

I recently upgraded my installation of RedHat 9 (Intel) to Fedora Core
1. I then decided to upgrade to the latest version of KDE, as the
Fedora upgrade did not perform this on its own. I downloaded all the
RPM's for KDE 3.2. I also had to install a few other components that
where missing.

I then tried "rpm -Fvh *.rpm" to perform the upgrade, and I received a
message telling me that one of the components in koffice conflicted with
one of the components I was trying to installed. I never use koffice so
I didn't care about the conflict. I tried "rpm --replacefiles -Fvh
*.rpm". This allowed all the packages to install.

Now when I try to start up X Windows and KDE I'm left with nothing but a
bluish screen and a black arrow cursor that responds to the mouse.

What steps can I take to diagnose and fix this problem?
