Continuing problem (not) running kde3 from kdm - SOLVED

Found the answer myself: http://docs.kde.org/en/HEAD/kdebase/kdm/kdmrc.html 
documents kdmrc very thoroughly. Some options don't seem to work (eg. 
BackgroundCfg sems to be ignored), but maybe that's just my system.
