I am not sure if it will help you, but I installed KDE 3.2 
into /usr/local/kde3.2 on Mandrake 9.1, using Konstruct and ssh is working as 
before. Did you update Qt before compiling KDE?

export QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
export KDEDIR=/usr/local/kde3.2
export PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$KDEDIR/bin:$PATH

Idem for LD_LIBRARY_PATH
