NFS mounted home directory problems again

I have a small network with a number of systems mounting home directories from
a file server. All the machines were running KDE 3.0, but I've just upgraded
to SuSE Linux 8.2 with KDE 3.1 on 2 machines. Both KDE versions use the same
dotfile location (.kde). When I login on a system running a different KDE
version to the version which generated the common dotfiles, the desktop is
corrupted. Desktop icons and much of the panel contents are missing.
Has anyone else seen this?
