why do some jpgs preview as thumbnails and other not?

i'm using kde 3.1.1 on gentoo and for the most part, i've been blown away by 
the feature set in the latest kde release.  but one thing is bothering me:  i 
just bought a shiny new digital camera, and some of the pics i'm taking are 
rather large (both in file size and dimenstions).  but even though all the 
pics i have are jpeg-compressed, only some of them are previewed as 
thumbnails in konqueror.  it seems that larger files (>1mb) aren't 
thumbnailed.  why is that?  is that configurable somewhere?
