this sound verry simmilar to what had hit me. But restoring
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf from xf86tools-0.1-539.rpm (which is part of XFree86
4.3), did not cure my pain.
Does somebody know, what is smashed too by this KFontInst?
I did downgrade KDE from 3.1.2 to 3.1.1 and also reinstalled xf86-4.3, but
it seems to be a configuration thing, that prevents me from seeing all my
bitmapped fonts...
