I spoke too soon.

KFontInst is seriously broken.

It removes directories for bit mapped fonts (including fonts installed 
by KDE) from the: "/etc/fonts/fonts.conf" file.

This is a serious bug which has been reported.  Please add your 
comments and vote for it.
