The Adobe Helvetica comes with XFree86 and is a bitmapped font. Just as a
feeling from my intuition, I would request you, not to try enabling AA, as
it my reintroduce the problem after some sessions. They will not go away,
after securely you disabled AA.
But the my problem was only in bitmapped-fonts, but not all
bitmapped-fonts did not show... So it's not so easy.

I would request you, not to use the kde-font-intstaller. KDE/Qt is using
all X fonts.

Did you try them, just before you upgraded to 3.1.2? I am pretty sure, you
have the problem again, with qt3.1.2.
If you go to the "fonts"-Dialog of konqueror and use the
drop-down-selections for the fonts, are there (when dropped down) many
empty choices?
